Anna Roberts very kindly hosted the presentation of the 2009 Performance Awards at Strathallan Castle on Saturday 23 January 2010. The event was well attended and Anna laid on blazing fires in the Library and Dining-Room. Marguerite Osborne, our Vice-President welcomed everyone. Jennifer Valentine, the Secretary and organiser of the Scheme, had done a stalwart job throughout the year which culminated in her totting up the points of the all competitors to reveal the much anticipated awards.
I Alan presents Alexy with the Quaich 2009 WInners with Jennifer Valentine It was a particular pleasure to welcome Alan Giles, husband of the late Sue Giles a Highland Pony Society member and enthusiast who loved to encourage children. Alan, who had travelled up with friends from Buckinghamshire, awarded a memorial Quaich for the highest placed junior in both the England and Wales Scheme and the Scottish Scheme. This year the accolade went to top Junior of the England and Wales Scheme, Alexy Jackson from Cumbria who was able to accept the award personally having travelled from Cumbria for the evening. She pipped the Scottish winner Evelyn Crate to the post by the narrowest of margins.
Another trophy being presented for the first time was the Jinty of Prosen Memorial Cup for Show-Jumping which had been presented in memory of this very special pony by Shonagh Lawson. It was a special moment when she awarded it to her sister Heather who had the highest points in this discipline.
The Quest of Mendick Quaich for the highest placed Highland pony owned by a member of the Society at HOYS and also the Rannoch of Trailtrow Trophy for the highest placed Highland pony owned by a member of the Society at Olympia, were presented to Anne Mitchell following her magnificent achievement with home bred Dunedin Marksman.
Following the presentations by Marguerite Osborne, supper was served in the castle’s dining room was much enjoyed by all with delicious stovies and much home baking, kindly provided by Society and Council members.
The Council of the Society is greatly indebted to Jennifer Valentine who organises not only the competitors but also makes all the arrangements for the awards evening. If you would like to buy a card for the 2010 Awards Scheme, they are available now at a cost only £5 payable to the Highland Pony Society. The Scheme is a wonderful way of pitting your efforts not only against yourself but also your Highland pony friends.
