The Highland Pony Society Judges’ Seminar was held at Greenlands Equestrian Centre, Carlisle at the end of October 2009.
Over 30 judges attended and enjoyed the opportunity to discuss judging and related issues, inspired by a variety of presentations. Two experienced Red Cross Technicians warmed up the crowd by describing the requirements of those first on the scene of accidents in the equestrian world. As they completed their talk, a rider and pony came adrift in the warm up arena and they were pressed into service!
Fourteen excellent "guinea pig" ponies were divided into a mixed in hand class and a ridden class with Sheila Brooks leading a discussion on working with probationers. Experienced In Hand judge and Highland Pony Society President, Hugh Duncan, acted as a probationer and between them they created realistic scenarios. The spectators were glad to express their views and much discussion followed. Greenlands served a most welcome hot lunch and the judges took a lot of encouragement to break up their discussions and return to the arena for the final presentation of the day. Vicky Robertson, a specialist equine vet currently practising in Alnwick, and shortly to move to Cheshire, gave a captivating illustrated presentation on veterinary aspects of the show pony. She surprised the attendees with some very extreme examples of commonly found conditions. Her model ponies, taken from the livery yard at Greenlands, helped to illustrate several of the points she had been making. Throughout the day, much discussion was stimulated and questions answered, making the official Question and Answer session with Sheila Brooks, Hugh Duncan, Heather Prescott and Vicky Robertson quite a quiet affair!
